Being a nurse isn’t an easy thing at all, in fact, it is one of the most demanding and tiring jobs. Whether you are a surgical nurse, a pediatric nurse or an anesthetic nurse, the part of your job is being ready for changes. Even though the nature of this job is very humane, it requires all of your attention and full commitment to it. One of the most annoying things in this job is surely the night shift. It changes both your daily routine and your personal life, not to mention your obligations and plans. But you cannot change that, night shift will always one of your work tasks and you need to learn to cope with it the best way you can. Here are a few tips that might make your night shift easier.

  1. Adapt to a different sleep schedule.

Even though it sounds easy, it is, in fact, one of the hardest things for any human. Working at night interrupts your sleep pattern and adapting to a different one is very hard. However, you must get an adequate amount of sleep, or you won’t be able to function and do your job properly. Going back to sleep when you’re already up is sometimes a real torture, but you must do it. Make sleep priority of your day. The moment you come home, shower and get to your bed, teach your body to relax even in this kind of circumstances, darken your room and enjoy your sleep.

  1. Coffee is your friend.

Coffee and all other caffeinated products are a ‘must have’ for most of the professional nurses out there, but you need to be careful about them. Use caffeinated product wisely, too much coffee won’t do you good, you tolerance will rise, and you won’t be able to stay on alert. Coffee, in right amounts, can make you awake, and it will improve your alertness, this is crucial since your sleepy patients won’t wait for you to wake up.

  1. Eat healthy.

Eating healthy and choosing the right snacks is critical for every nurse, not because her/his looks but their ability to stay alerted and their success on the job. A healthy diet improves your energy, stamina and performance levels. Choose the food that provides you with energy, not the food that makes you sleepy, and do not overeat, ever. Eat smaller portions, full of vegetables, nuts, and fruits. It will be enough to let you survive night shifts.

  1. Make your coworkers your friends.

Everything is easier if you’re in the right company. During the day there is more managers, directors, and personnel in general which means you don’t even have to speak to anyone, you will get your work tasks, you will complete them, and that’s it. However, nurses in the night shift have some autonomy, they have to communicate to keep everything in order, and working during the evening will be more pleasant to everyone if your surrounding is friendly.
